I had my appointment with the physio a couple of days ago. I could have gone to the one the doctor recommended, which would've been free, for all of the treatments, though I saw that physio after the car accident last year and while she did get the neck and shoulders loose again, I thought, "I can do better." Which was why I sought out the recommendation.
This particular physio happens to be part-in-parcel of one of the gyms I go to - not the one near my house, but the one in the Auckland CBD.
I rocked up to the appointment, and straight away he could tell that it was sprained. What was interesting to find out was that the sprain itself was quite likely a month or a month and a half ago. The ligament on the outside of my foot had stretched, and there were holes in the tissue. So what had happened was that I'd sprained it without even realising it.
With the ligament having holes in it, new tissue was trying to regrow to fill up the tears. But, because of my HIGH IMPACT, BITCHES lifestyle, every time new tissue tried to form, I would bounce bounce bounce around and rupture it. This meant that the new tissue would bleed, and this bleeding was what was causing the pain and swelling.
To get the new tissue to grow back without it rupturing before it has a chance to truly form, the foot needs to be semi-immobilised. So now, I have three rolls of medical tape wound around my foot to hold it in place. I feel even more injured with the tape on than I did when the foot was Actually Hurting.
He started to talk me through what exercises I can and can't do - and some of this contradicts what I was told by the doctor, though it seems as though the physio has much more insight and experience surrounding this sort of thing while the doctor may have been giving out more generic advice.
| Mr Physio Man | How do you think you may have originally sprained it? |
| Marshmallow | Probably from doing Body Step. I'm a newbie at it, and I know I've rolled my ankle more than once from it. |
| Mr Physio Man | How many Step classes do you do per week? |
| Marshmallow | One, and sometimes I do the Step/Pump hybrid class. |
| Mr Physio Man | In a typical week, which classes would you do? |
| Marshmallow | I do mainly RPM, Body Jam, a bit of Body Pump, and I'd try to get in one Step class if I can. And one Balance class. |
| Mr Physio Man | How many of each? |
| Marshmallow | 3 Jam, 2 RPM, 2 Pump, 1 or 2 Step, and 1 Balance |
| Mr Physio Man | Wow, that's a good schedule. |
| Mr Physio Man | You're all right to carry on with Pump, RPM and Balance, though we need to give the ligament a bit more time to get used to lateral movement before we reintroduce the high impact classes. |
| Marshmallow | Okay. |
| Marshmallow | What about the other stuff? |
| Mr Physio Man | Other stuff? |
| Marshmallow | My other training. |
| Mr Physio Man | ... |
| Mr Physio Man | You mean there's MORE?! |
Mr Physio Man wasn't expecting me to add onto that list the sessions with Adam (and by the way, Adam and I have been training together for 2 years now - that in itself is pretty damn awesome), the workouts designed by Adam, and the training for runs and swims and whatnot.
Anyways, I can't do anything high impact for a month. And because I'm a nut, I entered in 5 out of 6 of the Run Auckland races for 2009. And the only reason why I didn't enter all 6 of them is because I've already entered a swim on that day. I contemplated doing both the swim and the run but I figured that I might need a bit of time to thaw out before doing cardiovascular ON LAND activity.
Right. I have an exam tomorrow and I am shitting myself. I thought I left behind all this studying malarkey at Uni, but nope, I need Technical Qualifications, huzzah!
[soooooooooo screwed...!]

You definitely do a lot of exercise and I am sure the Physio was impressed (as would anyone!).
Good luck with your exam, by the way. What is it regarding? I also would have assumed that exams are the things of the past now that we are fulltime workers >_<
Its for a Microsoft technical qualification - I need it so that our company can be a certified partner. We need at least two people to hold the qualification, and I'm the guinea pig. O_O
That is some crazy-arse training schedule! It's confirmed - you are actually clinically insane.
:o)
Hope the foot heals before you explode from frustration.
And good luck for the exam....you'll be fine. You're smart. I have faith.
Wow Raina, I'm currently training for a 5k fun run (aside from all the classes I teach) and I can't do nearly as much as you do every week. :O
You totally rock. I hope your foot gets better fast! Good thing you can still do some of your classes and such!
Good to see you found a physio that is a bit more helpful then the last person you saw!
Good luck with the exam, you're probably doing it as I type... I do not envy you that! :-)
Could I please have just a wee teensy leedle bit of your enthusiasm and motivation so that I could just get my arse back into the gym?
You so totally rock, you honestly are an inspiration to people like me out there (though I'm still slack and not motivated) and I always think I should be more like Marshmallow.... How far I'd have come by now if I was like Marshmallow... But for now I continue to live vicariously through your exercise :D It's working (not really) for me lol.....
Hope the exam went well :)
And I hope that ankle heals up quick for ya.
And "HIGH IMPACT, BITCHES" should totally be on a t-shirt :D
Good luck on the test! I am sending you good vibes right now...
I'm glad you got your injury figured out and that it can heal now.
So much exercise eh! It's all good.
Nice for you to get some kudos from a health professional unlike that other crazy doctor.
