For a Beginner

This post was initially going to be about my wetsuit trying on madness, though that will be delivered to you at another date.

Instead, I have something more sombre to write about.

Last weekend, during Body Jam, my shoes felt a bit strange - like there was something else inside them. During the Jam class, I kept on taking off my shoe and looking inside it; it felt like the cushioning had slid out of place or something like that.

I didn't think much of it.

Then on Monday, during Body Pump, I felt the same strangeness in a completely different pair of shoes. From that, I could tell it wasn't the shoes that were the problem, but it was my foot. Since it wasn't hurting, I figured that maybe I'd slept on it a bit strange and it just needed some movement to straighten it out. For the next few days, I felt the odd-ness from time to time, but it didn't hinder anything. I did Body Pump, Body Balance, Body Step, Body Jam, a session with Adam, two weights sessions, and RPM Enduro without it being much of an issue.

Though on Thursday morning, I got up to try out Step/Pump - the hybrid Step Aerobics and High-Rep-Low-Weight programme. When I started off the Step tracks, it felt very uncomfortable. Five minutes later, I had searing pain through the front of my foot. It was the first time that it had hurt.

Throughout the day, it got worse - it felt like the outside of my left foot was curling under itself. My toes were digging into each other as well and something did not feel right at all.

I emailed my Body Balance instructor asking who I should see about it, and she gave me the name of a physio who could help me out. I left a message and he called me back, saying that I should go and see a doctor first so that I could get his physio sessions free through ACC. Very thorough of him, I must say.

So I made an appointment and went to see the doctor.

I hate doctors. Every flu and fever and whatnot that I've had recently, I've avoided going to the doctor. Today, I remembered why.

When I was called in the doctor sat down at his desk. I sat down in the chair opposite him. There was some awkward silence. Since he didn't say so much as a 'Hello, how are you?' or, 'So, what can I do for you?' or, 'So, what seems to be the problem?', I uncomfortable started talking to him about the foot.

About how in recent days, it's felt uncomfortable, but not sore until very recently. I described to him how the foot felt, how it seemed to curl under itself and the swelling I had spotted in the evening. You couldn't even see the heel bone on the left foot, since the tissue had swollen up so much.

He looked at me for a few moments after I had finished talking. After more silence, I asked him if it could be broken - a hairline fracture or something similar - or whether it could be sprained.

Silence again. Then he said, "It's because you put too much pressure on it."

That confused me. I said, "Uh... but if there's any leg I favour leaning on, it's my right, because it's weaker." I babbled on a bit longer about how in lunge tracks in Body Pump, I fatigue the right leg first because of the difference in strength. I know that I'm left-footed, like I'm left-handed, so I make a conscious effort to use the right leg more so that its strength can be built up a bit more.

He seemed to ignore this. He said, "It's because of the weight of your body that the pressure is being put on it. You need to exercise and eat less and then it won't hurt."

At this point, I didn't realise the enormity of what he was saying. I was puzzled, on a scientific level. I said, "But... that doesn't make any sense? I already exercise frequently and eat well..." I didn't understand what exercise and eating had to do with a swollen foot. I was scratching my head, trying to understand why he would suggest that to me as a remedy.

He got up, opened the door to usher me out and said, "Once you've lost 20 kilos, it should be fine."

I was still sitting down at this point and at that moment, it hit me as to what he was saying.

He was saying that the pain in my foot was because I was too fat.

My jaw dropped. While I was speechless, he said, "Just start exercising. Begin with 15 minute walk every evening after dinner, then increase to 20, 30 minutes once you get fitter. 3 times a week should be fine for a beginner."

Did he just say what I think he said? Did he just call me a BEGINNER?

OH HELL NO.

I was less upset by the fact that he had told me to lose weight than I was from him assuming that I was a beginner to exercise. Fuelled by anger, I told him that I do a large quantity of exercise every day - at least an hour, up to three hours, of HIGH IMPACT cardio and weights. I told him about 5k race, about the ocean swims I'd entered, and he just shook his head and waved me off. He said, "Don't take this the wrong way, but if you really did that much exercise? You would look very different now."

It was like being trout slapped.

I snatched up my bag and stormed out of there. Stormed out past the reception where the receptionist yelled at me as I went through the doors outside. Presumably she was expecting me to pay for the doctor's consultation. FUCK THAT.

I spoke to someone I know for a recommendation for someone not so 'prejudicial'. She recommended someone more expensive, less available, and much further away from my home than this doctor.

But fuck me, I deserve to be treated better than that, and if it means boycotting him and driving halfway across Auckland to see someone who treats my injuries and doesn't think I'm a liar? So be it.

And don't you worry. I'm drafting my letter to the Commerce Commission AND Human Rights Commission as we speak.

Oh. Em. Eff. Gee. I've had bad experiences with doctors before (not weight related) but THAT takes the cake!

I'm so glad you told him what you do, and even more glad you're pursuing it! After all the work you've done you shouldn't stand for shit like this; how dare he? Urg, cunt of the highest order. Keep us updated.

What a right utter bastard.

Glad to hear you're dobbing him in. He needs a swift kick up the backside.

He may have managed to pass his medical exams, but obviously he was away the day they taught LISTENING and ASKING QUESTIONS. Not to mention TREATING YOUR PATIENTS LIKE PEOPLE.

What a knob.

I am absolutely gobsmacked, seriously staggered, there are no words...the more I read the lower my jaw fell, I just cannot believe that a person so ignorant, so obnoxiously arrogant and insensitive can be a member of the healing profession. I'm just disgusted, but oh so proud of you missy for standing your ground, and heavens but if you weren't reporting him then I would...if you weren't such a strong smart young woman, that could have some serious triggering effects. God, what an almighty ass. Ah, and apparently there are a few words...

OH my GOSH. No he did NOT. I want to slap him FOR you. How condescending... and knowing how fit you ARE, it is just shocking to me that someone would treat you this way! OMG, you should challenge him to a triathalon, the ass. Show him who is FIT.

I hope he gets a reprimand for that behavior!!

Let us know whats wrong with your foot!

I fire fat phobic doctors. You do NOT deserve that. What an idiot. Find one who respects you and will actually treat your problem. I drive almost an hour for a great one now, which sucks. But she's worth it. Took me a while to find her. Ditto my midwife.

Keep us posted on your foot -- I've been thinking of ya!

Sounds like a bit of a quack to me.

Aaarrghhh. Just, arrghhhhh. Picture me tearing my hair out in frustration and disgust. There was a blog around for a while called "First Do No Harm" which posted stories of doctors like yours, but I can't believe they exist here in NZ as well! Definitely don't pay the bill and if challenged, put it in writing.

Though I'm a bit confused about why the physio told you to get a doctor's referral, because you certainly don't need one! You can just book an appointment with any physio you want.

Actually, while I think of it, Dr Weeramuni at the medical clinic in Lynmall City, was my doctor for years and she is excellent. Plus being New Lynn, they're cheaper than many. If you're out that way exercising then they're right next door.

*jaw still hanging around me hips* !!!! What a monumental wanker... and he calls himself a doctor???? I hope you have seen someone else by now...cos obviously you have a problem with your foot still.... and by the way... I am soooo sorry to forget to invite you to me party tomorrow! If you can be arsed, you are most welcome! Just email me for the address!!! There are a few bloggers coming!

He what? Seriously?

{checks calendar} It's not April, this can't be a joke. But...{truly gobsmacked and speechless}

Un-freakin-believable!! I've had weight-biased and gender-biased docs before, but never anything so blatant! Glad you're following through with a report.

I cannot get my jaw off the floor. Seriously, I'm absolutely gobmacked, Now I'll have to go see a doctor about chin-drop. Let's hope they don't tell me that it's because I'm too fat....

In all seriousness though..... Wow. I wish you were making this up, but unfortunately, I've had doctors in the past who focus on my weight and nothing else. I go in for a medical certificate because I've gotten a flu, and they tell me that "I'll be fine if I lose some weight". WTF? I have found a very nice lady doctor now who treats me for what I go in for, and I hope you find a good doctor too.

And please post an update if you get any response from the Commerce Commission and the Human Rights Commission. Hopefully this "doctor" gets the canning he richly deserves!

What a idiot im glad your complaining about him. One of my friends had a similar problem with her doctor she went to see him for depression and he told her the reason she might be depressed was beacuse she was overweight.

Wow... just wow.

I hate that people are like that. WTF? What right does he have? How the Frick would he know what you're doing when you aren't in the doctor's office? He hasn't got a clue.

Educated people can be so stupid sometimes.

can't believe that this happens. Go to a physio. This is a sports related injury and a good doctor will refer you to one anyway. Find a good sports physio and they will treat you like an athlete, no matter what your size. Not to say there won't be truths like 'if you were lighter you are less likely to get impact injuries' (hello me getting a foot injury two weeks out from marathon), but to be actually disbelieved??? I would be writing letters too!!!

Ohhh that is so infuriating. The nerve of him! Good on you for writing letters - I hope he gets what he deserves!

My JAW is on the FLOOR!

FUCK!

Did he ever WEIGH you before he made that comment? Did he ask what type of exercise you do on a regular basis? Jesus!

Whenever you find out what is wrong with your foot, you should to send a copy of the report to that Doctor, along with the copy of the letter of complaint. Oh, and a letter from your gym confirming your weekly workout!

ARSEHOLEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE!!!!

Please post a copy of the letter that you write so we can all cheer!

Shit. Hang in there, I think - KNOW - you are amazing! :)

can i give a big FU to that doctor? Did he ask if you were doing HIGH IMPACT exercise? or even a large volume of medium to low impact exercise? You know, what causes stress fractures in most runners who usually happen to weight less than my right leg?

i hate doctors.

Did he try and offer any advice on losing weight? did he ask what your current regimine was and offer to change it an a way that wouldnt exaserbate the problem?

Nope.

As a personal trainer, the second i heard the symptoms i knew it was due to impact- not weight. and i have nothing close to a medical degree. and i sure as hell wont ever make as much money as him either. no fair.

Hey, Just recently found your blog. I think you should post the name of the doctor so we can all avoid the arrogant pig.

Hi there, I'm a new reader too. I cannot believe what a incompetant half witted moron this GIT is. Definately send him a copy of everything Cranky suggested. Good luck with finding a new doc. Maybe go to the physio first, then get a referal if need be to get the free sessions. Good Luck.

you said you felt trout slapped....

can I volunteer to hold him down while you perform the entire monty python fish slapping dance on him?

preferably using a swordfish? marlin? small cranky shark?

There are no words for how much of a tool he is. I shudder to think that there must be many people who see him who don't have your healthy self esteem.

It shocks me to think that some doctors act like this. Not only was he dismissive in blaming your injury on your perceived fatness, but then to ignore what you explicitly told him, in fact choosing to NOT BELIEVE you. It's deplorable patient care.

Unfortunately it's not the first instance of such ignorance that i've seen in the medical profession - a friend of mine who is 6'6" and is in good physical shape (a few extra kilos) was told by his GP he had to lose 30kgs to be a healthy weight. BMI is notoriously incorrect and for such tall people it's even worse.

You better dob him in marshy - the rest of us will back you up!

ugh doctors and people in general. I do more exercise than most thin people I know and in groups of people no one would even consider including me in discussions about exercise because they assume I don't.
Good for you for taking a stand and walking out!

Wow. Wow. Wow. Terrible bedside manner! I am glad you are going somewhere else. Good luck with your foot!

People like him make me so angry! Good on you for walking out.

RoseNL said...

Are you sure that dude is an ACTUAL doctor? Cuz I'm certain as hell that doctors are supposed to go through a thorough anamnesis first, BEFORE examining whatever the symptoms are, BEFORE having a diagnosis and BEFORE suggesting a treatment regime...

What an idiot!! Hope he at least gets a warning - for society's sake!!

Tully said...

Arhhhhhhhhhhh, I really don't know what else to say. What an absolute fucking moron that doctor is. I am so glad you stood up for yourself and didn't pay for the privledge of being told you are a fat liar- which is basically what he said...

I must say that this is why I haven't been to the doctor for my foot and heel problems, I am too scared of what they will say and this has confirmed my fears.

I hope your next doctor has a clue.

Juliet said...

OMG. As my husband just put it when I shared this with him, that doctor is just King of the @$$holes, and the others make a pilgrimage to him and worship him.

He makes the doctor I just saw for my fibro look like the most sensitive doctor ever! I'm sorry you had to go through that. I hope your foot is feeling better soon, and that you get an answer.

Holy Smokes what a jerk.

He made up his mind & didn't even listen to you.

Oh, I sure hope you got a response from your letter!! Docs like him should not be practicing - they are a waste of a diploma.
